16 June 2020

On Monday 15th June, Futures Day was held to aid our students to begin the process of preparing for life after Birkenhead School. It comprised of Zoom sessions led by our Futures Team which comprises of Head of Sixth Form, teaching staff, and the Alumni and Futures Co-ordinator. It was a very beneficial day for all involved. Read more to find out about the experience from two of our Lower Sixth students.

There were 3 workshops: Choices (Apprenticeships and Internships), UCAS (the process and starting to complete their applications) and Writing a Personal Statement.

In the afternoon there were drop-in sessions:

  • Thinking About Apprenticeships
  • Work Experience and Industry Contact Support
  • Personal Statement Writing
  • UCAS Troubleshooting

Grace, Lower Sixth

"A day of online talks and lectures on Monday the 15th June presented a nice contrast from our scheduled lessons and addressed the increasingly relevant matter of applying for higher education. Due to the pandemic, it has been even easier to feel overwhelmed and lost at the prospect of life beyond school, but this day dedicated completely to addressing this worry has been a huge relief and truly made me feel supported and confident. The day started with stories of experience in higher education from the staff themselves, followed by lectures from the futures team focusing on matters such as writing your personal statement and choosing the right university for you. Drop-in sessions in the afternoon made sure everyone was heard and had the chance to ask any questions about the process, showing why I love my school so much. Everyone's voices are treated equally and all students are given the support to feel good about their future, no matter the hardship or the goal."

Archie, Lower Sixth

"On June 15th, those of us in Lower Sixth were fortunate enough to take part in the first ‘Zoom’ Futures Day. The timetable, comprising of sessions about UCAS and post-school study, ensured that we were able to discover how to best go about preparing for the various application processes ahead. In particular, the session on writing the personal statement, led by Mrs Vicars, was of great help as the topic of structuring the dreaded document proved to be very useful! The day was just another example of how the school has continued to rise to the challenges posed by COVID-19."
