26 February 2021

Over the last few weeks, Year Two have been learning how to write letters. As part of this, they read a story called ‘Alexander and the Curly Wurly Caterpillar’ By Christopher Quirk.

The children were set the task of writing a letter to Mr Quirk asking questions about his book. The children then sent their letters via email to him. This week the children received individual letters back. The children absolutely loved having a real author write to them and it gave us a real purpose for writing.

Dear Bryn
Thank you for your letter. You have a very good use of vocabulary; I particularly enjoyed it when you said the book was miserable. I understand what you mean because Alexander is sad in the middle and he does act miserable. I am glad you find the book funny.
It’s good to hear your Uncle is an Author too. My favourite book of his is The Lolipop Knight, but I’m afraid I do not know him personally.
Alexander and the Curly Wurly Caterpillar did not take me very long to write at all, but it did take me a very long time to make the book. 6 years in total.
My inspiration for the book is easy. It is a true story from when I was a young boy.
I have written the next book, which is about Alexander's sister Annabelle. This will be available to read in the summer.
Yours Sincerely
Christopher Quirk

Dear Zak

Thank you very much for your letter. I'm glad that you have read and enjoyed the Alexander book. I decided to call the main character Alexander because I thought it sounded like a formal name and one you would not necessarily expect them to get into trouble. I made his favourite thing a red ball because when I was a young boy I used to play football quite a lot. I chose a caterpillar because I think there is something very interesting with caterpillars, the way they move and eat. I thought a caterpillar would make a great magical character.

Yours Sincerely

Christopher Quirk

Dear Georgia

Thank you very much for your letter. Your handwriting is very good. Keep working hard on it. Thank you for taking an interest in my work and my daughter. I have agreed to write 10 books in the Alexander series. The second book is due for release in the summer and is about Alexanders sister Annabelle. I have also written the third and that is about Alexanders best friend Ezekiel.
My daughters name is Abigail and she is 22 months old. She really likes the Alexander book although she can not read yet and just enjoys the pictures.

Yours Sincerely

Christopher Quirk
