Why Choose Birkenhead School

At Birkenhead School, we offer more than just an outstanding education — we offer a place where students are known, supported, and inspired to achieve their full potential.

Small Class Sizes
With smaller class sizes, each student is truly seen. Talents are nurtured, individual needs are met, and every child is encouraged to stretch and flourish.

Academic Excellence
Independent research shows that pupils at independent schools gain the equivalent of two extra years of progress by age 16. Our students continue to achieve exceptional results:

*A Level 2024**: 25% A\*, 62% A\*/A

*GCSE 2024**: 59% Grades 9–7

These results place Birkenhead School among the top-performing schools nationally.

Pastoral Care
Our students’ happiness and wellbeing are at the heart of everything we do. We pride ourselves on creating a kind, supportive community where every child feels safe, valued, and able to be themselves.

Beyond the Curriculum
Our broad and engaging curriculum includes lessons that go beyond the classroom — from etiquette training to public speaking — equipping students with valuable life skills and the confidence to succeed.

Leadership Opportunities
Through our Leadership Pathways programme, students take on meaningful leadership and mentoring roles that help them grow in confidence, responsibility, and character.

Outstanding Co-Curricular Programme
From Sport, Music and Drama to educational trips across the UK and abroad, our vibrant co-curricular programme helps pupils explore new interests and deepen existing passions.

Clubs and Activities
Whether it’s Electronics Club, Art Club, or a new sport to try — our wide-ranging programme of weekly clubs ensures there’s something for everyone to discover and enjoy.

A Warm, Welcoming Community
At every stage of their school journey, from Early Years through to Sixth Form, our students benefit from a close-knit, nurturing environment — and remain part of our wider alumni family, The Birkonian Society, long after they leave.

Upcoming Assessment Days

We warmly invite children considering entry into Year 7 to join us for one of our Taster & Assessment Days, held in June of Year 5 or January of Year 6.

These days are designed to be enjoyable and welcoming experiences, where children spend time in small groups getting to know the School, meeting staff and students, and taking part in a variety of engaging activities.

While we use the day to gain a well-rounded picture of each child, both in formal and informal settings, there’s no need for specific preparation. Children will complete an Adaptive Admissions Test and take part in a short group interview, allowing us to see their natural strengths, curiosity, and potential.

We aim to make the experience as relaxed and positive as possible, helping children to feel confident and excited about the next step in their educational journey.

September 2026 Entry (Year 6 applicants) – Monday 19th – Wednesday 21st January 2026

September 2027 Entry (Year 5 applicants) – Monday 8th to Wednesday 10th June 2026
