Beyond the Curriculum

Sunday Times Schools Guide 2025 - Independent Secondary School of the Year North West

Developing Life Skills

Beyond the Curriculum is designed, as the name suggests, to offer students an opportunity to explore areas of interest outside their A Level subjects. Alongside a core Futures course in critical thinking, research, presentation and interview skills, students are able to choose from a range of options such as the Gold Crest Award in Science, Sports Coaching and Leadership, Creative Writing & Reading for Inspiration and Ceramics, to name but a few.

Extended Project Qualification

Within the compass of ‘BtC’, we also offer the EPQ, or Extended Project Qualification, offering students the opportunity to undertake a largely self-directed and self-motivated project which is equivalent to half an A Level. This allows our sixth formers to develop the sort of independent learning skills that universities and employers look upon so favourably, and is just another example of the many enrichment opportunities afforded to them here at Birkenhead.
